Biographical Note
Bill Melton was born and raised in Dallas, Texas. He attended Sunset High School in 1957 and in 1964 earned a Bachelor in Arts from the University of Texas. Melton returned to Dallas in 1966 to work as Assistant General Manager of the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce. In 1969 Bill Melton became the General Manager of Wynnewood Shopping Center. He joined the Dallas County Commissioner's Court as Executive Assistant in 1972. Five years later he became County Treasurer - a position he held until 2002.
Bill Melton was noted for his civic involvement joining boards and committees where he saw a need. He served as president of the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce in 1973-74, the youngest appointee to hold the post.

Scope and Contents
The Bill Melton Collection contains materials from his management of the Wynnewood Shopping Center, as well as four boards/committees on which he served. The board/committee papers consist of the creation of the new WRR radio station at Fair Park, the building of a new Oak Cliff YMCA, the selection of a site for Reunion Arena, and the celebration of the United States Bicentennial Celebration at Fair Park with the presentation of the Goals for Dallas. Mr. Melton's papers as president of the Oak Cliff Chamber of Commerce can be found in MA91-1.
