Art, Movies & Music serves both research and informational needs in the performing and visual arts, and includes books, magazines, videos, CDs, LPs and original artwork.

The book collection is primarily circulating and includes materials in the subject areas of art, music, theatre, film, television, dance and fashion. Extensive reference sources are also available.

Notable collections include the history of fashion and design; biographical/historical files in film, theatre, dance, music, fashion and art; the Dallas Theater Center archives; the Dallas Symphony Orchestra archives and the Zine Collection.

Art, Movies & Music has an extensive graphic arts collection featuring hundreds of graphic novels, compilations and histories of comic books and newspaper comic strips, and an ever-growing collection of manga. This collection also includes in-depth sections and drawing instruction, graphic design and advertising art.

Special features include a dance studio, music rehearsal room, Fiber Arts Workroom and three rotating exhibit galleries available for visual art exhibitions and library sponsored events at no charge.

Each art exhibit lasts a month, opening on the second day of the month and running until the second last day of the month. Preference is given to local and emerging artists. There is no charge for using the exhibit, nor does the library participate in the selling of any artwork. The gallery is usually booked two years ahead. The art librarian or an administrator must review the artist's work for suitability. This may be done in person or by online methods. Contact art@dallas.gov for further information and requirements.

Music Classes

Music classes began in 2014 and have expanded since then. The program currently serves 3 different locations: Central, Hampton-Illinois and Vickery Park, and is looking to expand in 2026. The instructors provide high-quality music instruction to students ages 9 and up. Classes are free and are held weekly for 3 months. Instruments are provided during class, some of which are available for check out.

Las clases de música comenzaron en 2014 y han crecido mucho desde entonces. El programa actualmente se ofrece en tres sucursales: Central, Hampton-Illinois y Vickery Park. Los instructores brindan enseñanza musical de alta calidad a estudiantes de 9 años en adelante. Las clases son gratuitas y se imparten semanalmente durante un periodo de tres meses. Los instrumentos están disponibles durante las clases, y algunos se pueden prestar para llevar a casa.
